It mainly follows the young mouseling, who is an outcast to his kind because of his dumbo ears and his curiosity with humans, and it puts him in danger. Rather than giving the film the desired intelligence and grace, however, the approach merely makes the tale of despereaux feel uneven, occasionally awkward and a bit too slow to hold the attention of younger children. In some ways, this fits a story that feels like a fairy tale, and, in other ways, it does little to enliven a story that is somewhat slow paced.
